Cancellara’s Health

Mariano and Gabriella’s voyage against the flow: traveling from their home near Milan back to their southern family heritage in Cancellara to revive ancient techniques of living.

At their Eco-farm, Bioagrisalute of Cancellara, in the Basilicata region, even their selected grains have a history as compelling as theirs.  Their grains, grown organically in their vast fields extending up to 800 meters, come from a forgotten variety that was used during the fascist era to revamp the national production of wheat.  This variety goes under the name of Senator Cappelli.  Another ancient variety, the Saragolla,  was imported to the nearby Abruzzi region from Egypt about 1600 years ago.  The owners/ farmers of Biagrisalute , Gabriella Pizzarello and Mariano Ianniello, were also coming from another region, Lombardy,  where they emigrated to at a young age.  As time was passing by, the call to the native land was getting as strong as their will to fulfill their dream and in 1990 on a leap of faith they took the voyage backward to Mariano’s little town of Cancellara and set their farm there.  Today the farm has expanded its production under the skilful management of their young son Emiliano and his partner Giusy.  This is an interesting stop for nature, animal and culinary lovers, students interested in learning organically growing and processing techniques, for families looking for quality time and any traveler looking for a different experience.

The main staples of the farm are selected cereals and wheat still stone ground and processed by using old world techniques.  Legumes and fruits favored by the climate at this altitude are grown and processed in loco to produce flavorful homemade jams, marmalades and vegetable spreads.  As an integral part of the Eco-farm dream, free-range farming of cows, pigs, sheep, chickens and horses adds up to the beautiful scenery.

A great place to be in touch with nature, hiking, riding mountain bikes or taking archery lessons.  The right place to learn hands –on about organic techniques, how to make Italian bread, butter and, jams! For the explorer, naturalistic excursions with the experts in the field or just plain fun trips in the region are organized.

How to come here:

Bioagrisalute of Cancellara is 20 Kilometers from Potenza.. From Rome take the Intercity plus (Termini train station). The scenic trip takes 4hr 28min.  Please, call us at (39)348-5259786 or (39)0971-942005 to arrange  transport and stay

PATERNOSTER

cantina_paternoster

Famiglia Paternoster

Our family has been an integral part of the oenological history of Vulture since 1925, the grandfather Anselmo, vine-dresser like others, signs the first bottles of Aglianico.

His son Pino, true author of the success of the family, after studying oenology in Conegliano Veneto, during the difficult period of the second world war, gives the company a technical/managerial asset, projecting it towards international goals.

Still nowadays, on the threshold of the 90th vintage, with unchanged spirit of “Aglianico artisans”, we, the third generation, carry on the noble mission of ambassadors of the excellence of the Vulture area in the world, with our all-time passion and the responsibility of being the first…
